The Green School Programme is very important in Belcarra N.S. We already have secured three flags- ‘Litter and Waste’, ‘Energy’ and ‘Water’. We are currently working towards achieving our fourth green flag for the theme of ‘Travel’. We are very lucky to have an active and energetic Green Schools Committee in the school.

This is our Green Schools Committee for Year 1 of the Travel Theme.

Diarmuid Jennings  Senior Infants

Sarah Cunningham  First Class

Millie Jordan  Second Class

Megan Duffy  Third Class

Rian Prendergast  Fourth Class

Dearbhla Burke  Fifth Class

Darragh Lyons  Fifth Class

Amy Cunningham Sixth Class

This is a two year programme and we have a Travel Officer — Lukasz Kryzwon who works closely with us supporting us through the 7 Step process of the Travel theme. Our ultimate aim is to increase the number of pupils walking, cycling, scooting, carpooling, using public transport or using park ‘n’ stride instead of the private car on the school run. By promoting these sustainable modes of transport we lesson the schools impact on the environment, by reducing emissions and pollution and it also improves pupils’ safety, health and fitness.  Some great progress has been made so far on this theme. During the month of February we took part in the Big Travel Challenge and we recorded a huge increase in the number of children walking to and from school. Our numbers have been forwarded to An Taisce and we await the announcement of the overall -winning schools in the coming weeks.  Great effort was put in on the final day of the challenge when many of the children dressed in green to walk to school and they wore their funkiest shoes and socks. Keep up the good work!

National Spring Clean 2019

Junior Infants- First Class took part in the National Spring Clean today(April 5th) which is being run throughout the month of April. They were very busy with their clean up of the church car park and the playground. They did an amazing job !

Big Travel Challenge Award Ceremony

Belcarra N.S. was named Park 'n' Stride School of the year 2019 at an Award Ceremony in Haughton House, Dublin Zoo on April 11th. Representatives from the Green Schools Committee, teaching staff and our wonderful travel officer- Lukasz Krywan attended the ceremony and accepted our certificate, trophy and cheque for €500 on behalf of the school. A great day was held by all. The visit to the zoo and seeing the newest addition -the baby gorilla was an added bonus.

The Green Schools Committee would like to thank the pupils, parents and staff of Belcarra N.S. for their efforts in promoting sustainable and active travel modes to school. We want to thank An Taisce and Lukasz for all his help, work and guidance with the travel theme.

As we are hoping to bring about lasting change in our travel behaviour we are asking you the students and parents to keep participating in our WOW Days and other activities. Keep up the good work and congratulations once again on this wonderful achievement!

Walk to School Week 2019

Schools across Ireland were invited to participate in National Walk to School Week 2019 which took place from May 13th to May 17th. An Taisce's Green School National Walk to School is a country wide initiative which resulted  in thousands of pupils, their parents and teachers walking to and from school.

Building on the success of last years National Walk to School week 2018 'Green Schools' hope that schools will achieve the target of 20,000 pupils walking to school all over Ireland on National WOW(Walk on Wednesday) Day on May 15th. Belcarra National School students, their parents and teachers walked to school on May 15th with almost 100% of the students walking. This was a great achievement and congratulations to all those who took part. The students also dressed up in rainbow coloured clothes

to add a special twist to the day. A great effort was made by all participants.
